Far from being ‘dead,’ however, a rotting corpse is teeming with life. A growing number of scientists view a rotting corpse as the cornerstone of a vast and complex ecosystem, which emerges soon after death and flourishes and evolves as decomposition proceeds.
Tenderly swaddled in the wool shrouds she lay
Placed below layers of sand, vermiculite and clay
Weeks she spent there in 30 below
Biding her time amongst rich darkness…making
Odors pungent and strong enough to clear the sinus cavity
Like wise men from afar, the visitors come. Temperature now above 50
Send savory wafts of nutrition… filling the air
So long they have waited to see her beauty and taste her nutritious gifts
Wool Shrouds long gone have taken their place in the nitrate process
The visitors now clean her in loving kindness
Knowing the memory of her perfect visage will remain
Feast they do on the sweet gift, molten flesh.
In monorail style a focus team of workers clean and
Stay long enough to tidy the now empty cript.
